Virgil Williams, signed as an “athlete” from Evangel Christian in Shreveport, has moved from tailback to cornerback — and defensive coordinator O’Neill Gilbert said it won’t be long until Williams starts to play.
“I’ve really liked what I’ve seen from him thus far. He’s got cat-quick feet. His hands are extremely good,” Gilbert said. “He’s a little guy, but he’s very aggressive and he can run. We’ve been looking for a Virgil-type guy — a guy that’s confident, a guy that we can put on the island and let him cover so we can do what we do, which is put pressure on them.”
Williams, listed at 5-foot-9 and 160 pounds, practiced with the running backs throughout preseason camp and the first two weeks of the season, but has not played. He has also worked as a punt returner in practice.
“His redshirt will be burned. He will play,” Gilbert said. “There’s no if, and or but about that.”
