College Checklist for Freshmen Parents
This is the first year that admissions officials
will see on your child's transcript and, thus, is a good time to
take stock of his academic strengths and weakness. If your son has
any inkling of career goals, consider which classes would help him
achieve them. Additionally, think about which extracurriculars your
son should continue. Colleges look for students who have participated
in meaningful extracurricular activities throughout their high school
careers.
September/October
_____ Check out the www.evangelacademy.com. The
site contains information on college planning for every year of
high school.
_____ Be aware of your child's academic performance.
Are course levels appropriate?
_____ Encourage your child to participate in meaningful
activity, in and out of school. Consider community service. Begin
an Activities Record that records his accomplishments, activities,
and awards. Many colleges will ask for your child's resume with
his application.
January
_____ Evaluate your child's academic progress.
Are grades up to par? If not, what study habits need improvement?
_____ Review your child's course selection sheet
for sophomore year. Urge your child to select (or continue) the
most challenging classes possible and choose at least one community
service activity.
_____ Is your child enjoying extracurricular activities?
If not, what changes need to be made?
_____ Begin thinking about summer plans (camp. job,
travel, volunteer work).
May/June
_____ Evaluate your child's academic performance
and extracurricular involvement.
_____ Finalize summer plans.
